Rattan and Fibre Furniture The business in these commo- dities has further declined about 40 per cent in comparison with the preceding year on account of the enormous increase in freight.

Nutire Tobacco. The business this year has been increased by about 20 per cent in comparison with 1915.

Tinned Goods-On account of high cost of materials the price of tinned goods has been increased by 20 per cent and in consequence. the sale has been reduced by 40 per bort.

Vinegar-The business has been almost the same as last year. Knitted Vests and Socks.-The business has declined about 20 per cent owing to high cost of materials.

- Leather and Hides—The market has advanced by about 25 to 30 per cent in comparison with the preceding year and the busmess throughout the year has been good.

Ginger and Preserves. The business in this produce has declined about 50 per cent in comparison with the preceding year.

Soy.-Exports have been very poor and business has been reduced by per cent in comparison with the preceding year.

Paper-Import of this article has been very limited and in consequence, the consumption of Chinese paper has been increased by about 20 per cent.

Vermilion-Business has been very dull, a reduction of 40 per cent in comparison with last year having to be recorded.

Larl. The business has been very dull owing to an increase in cost price of about 30 per cent and the export was limited.

(c.)-FISHERIES.

A considerable proportion of the boat population of Hongkong supports itself by deep-sea fishing, in which pursuit a large number of junks are engaged. The villages of Aberdeen, Stanley, Shauki- wan, and also many in the New Territories, are largely dependent upon this industry for their prosperity. Fresh water fishi is im- ported from Canton and the West River. There are oyster beds of considerable value in Deep Bay.

(d)-FORESTRY, AGRICULTURE, AND BOTANY.

About 40,000 pine tree seellings were planted on the hills around the Fanling Golf Course, over 15,000 in the Cheungshawan catchment area, over 25,000 in the Tytam catchment area, 10,000 on the hills north of Kowloon City, and 370 in King'a Park.

Sixty-two (62) pounds of pine seed were sown broadcast in grassy areas on the south side of the Kowloon hills.

About 40,000 pine tree seedlings were raised for planting in 1917. -Over 1,000 broad-leaved trees were planted m" the Fram catchment area and 1,000 in the Pokfulam catchment area.

Nearly 7,000 broad-leaved trees were planted on the kills in the vicinity of the Fanling Golf Course and 446 on Cheung Chau Island.

One hundred (100) pine trees were likewise planted on Cheung Clau Island.

One thousand (1,000) broad-leaved trees were planted on the hills around Lok Ma Chau Police Station.

Over 1,800 flowering trees and shrubs, including 100 Poincianas, were planted in conspicuous places in Hongkong and Kowloon.

Alongside roads 269 broad-leaved trees were planted, and to cover bare cuttings 450 Fiens ang110 Vitis creepers were planted.

Five hundred and ninety-four (594) trees were planted along the road from Fanling to Sautiy and 153 between Bauling and Taipo. The previous year's failures were also made good.

Nearly 6,000 flowering trees and shrubs were planted on the hills in the vicinity of the Fauling Golf Course in addition to those already mentioned.

Creepers damaging trees in the Pokfulam, Aberdeen and Wongneichong forests were cut,

A block of between 20 aud 30 acres of pine trees was felled near Pokfulam.

It will not be necessary to replant this area as the grond is well covered with broad-leavel trees and young pines.

Large fellings of pine trees were also made on Farm Lots be- longing to the Dairy Farm Company.

Over 5,000,000 square feet were cleared of undergrowth in connection with anti-malarial measures.

In connection with survey work nearly 1,000,000 square feet were cleared.

Vegetables were grown in the economic garden at Fanling for demonstration purposes,

Onious raised from seed obtained from Teneriffe matured and were a great sucress.

The first rice crop was good but the second was poor generally, Lichees and peanuts were fair.

(e.)-LAND GRants and General VALUE OF LAND.

The net amount of premium received from sales of Crown land and pier rights for the year 1916 was $203,234, an increase of $123,658 on the preceding year and $6,351 greater than the average for the past five years.
